In general, a drive unit causes a machine or machine part to move. Over the years, more and more different applications have been devised by means of drives. But how does a drive work and what different types are there?

How does a drive system work?

A machine or machine part is set in motion by a regulating system. We call this system as a whole a drive system. When the driving system is directly connected to the driven object we call it a direct drive. However, in most cases a transmission is required between the driving system and the driven object. One then speaks of an indirect drive. To get an idea of drives, one can think of, for example, the internal combustion engine or the drive of the blades of a windmill.

A drive can work in several ways. Gearboxes with gears are used in many drives. A gear, cog or comb wheel is a toothed part combined with another toothed part used in drives to initiate a motion. In addition to a motion, a gear can also change the speed or direction of the force delivered. When using a gear or worm gear, we often refer to it as a mechanical drive, but there are more types of drives.

What different types of drives are there?

There are several drive systems present in technology today:
- Mechanical drives
In which a mechanical power is used to provide labor.
- Electric drives
In electric drives, electricity is converted into a mechanical power. Electric drives are used in electric motors to set a machine or implement in motion. Electric drives are becoming increasingly popular in the market. AE Trading has several options within electric drives.
- Hydraulic drives
In hydraulic drives, machines or machine parts are set in motion by fluid pressure. Hydraulic oil is then often used for the fluid pressure.
- Pneumatic drives
Pneumatic drives are similar to hydraulic, but are driven by air pressure instead of a fluid.

Within these different types of drives, there are, for example, spindle drives, worm gear drives, lifting columns and (electric) scissor elevators.

With our linear drive technology, we provide a customized interior. A great example of our interior customization is, for example, the TV elevator system. This powerful system can be built into furniture and used for external and internal company presentations.

Is my workplace ergonomic?

Above we have already briefly discussed the applications of drives for office furniture & interior design. The importance of an ergonomic workplace has become increasingly relevant. Working ergonomically means adopting the correct working posture and scheduling sufficient physical and mental rest moments for employees. The Office Furniture market segment often recommends drives that we control with our LOGICDATA controls, click here for an overview. Our drives / motors are most often used in sit-stand tables. Ergonomics is an important factor today. Adjusting a desk is done by means of lifting columns. These lifting columns / lifting columns contain our drives, possibly in combination with a spindle.
